Healthy dark chocolate

  Hey everyone,

Today I would like to talk a bit about dark chocolate. As far as you know, sweets are almost always perceived as food which can bring harm for our health. However, it is not always the case. Dark chocolate, despite its high fat content, is a food that has a lot of healthy benefits.

Among main health benefits are its advantages for heart and brain. Dark chocolate helps to lower blood pressure, can help with improvement in blood flow  to the brain and heart and prevent formation of blood cloths. Further, due to phenylethylamine found in dark chocolate it is able to positively effect our mood. It may simply make us feel happier.

As for other benefits, this kind of chocolate helps control blood sugar. Dark chocolate improves insulin resistance by helping our cells to function good. In fact, it has low glycemix index and therefore it is unlikely to cause huge spikes in our blood sugar levels.

Furthermore, this chocolate has a lot of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It helps free our body of free radicals that are often involved in the process of aging and may even lead to cancer development. Therefore the consumption of food that is  rich in free radicals like dark chocolate often can help with cancer and aging issues. Moreover, dark chocolate is rich in potassium, copper, magnesium and iron. All elements of which are needed for our body.

One more benefit of dark chocolate is theobromine found in it. It hardens tooth enamel and helps to lower risk of getting plausible cavities. Further, it is mild stimulant.  It may suppress potential coughs.

The only serious negative problem of dark chocolate is its high fat content. One oz of which (28.4 g) has 9 g of fat which can be a serious amount for people that decide to consume dark chocolate without needed attention. Only substantial moderation of such high fat kind food can help us to get the most of dark chocolate consumption without getting in trouble with weight issues.

All in all, dark chocolate is a benefit for us if consumed in moderation. Despite its high fat content, dark chocolate has a lot of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that are needed for us.

  1. Great info on dark chocolate! I love it and consume in moderation as a treat at the end of the day (85% cocoa from Ecuador) and to my surprise I got so use to it that I find it hard to consume milk chocolate now…

  2. I have reading a lot about the benefits of chocolate. I always find chocolate (sweet) to be a gateway drug for me. So I stay away from from it. Do you have any recommended brands because for me it’s not the fat content as much as the sugar content in some of these chocolate products that is worrisome.

  3. Yum!! Chocolate & a cup of expresso in the morning…Hot chocolate during chilly weather … And a chocolate gelato during a hot summer day is always a good idea:)

  4. My daughter will be ecstatic about this! She’s addicted to chocolate so I’m always hiding it from her. I like the real dark chocolate but she likes the milk one, and it’s not so healthy! Here in Sicily we have the famous chocolate from Modica, but it’s too sugary for me.
